CULTURAL ADAPTATION

Cultural adaptation is the process by which a questionnaire developed for one specific country is adapted for use in other countries that use a similar language. Cultural adaptation is often necessary when the "universal" language approach that the FACIT methodology advocates is not used. In such cases, because a translation was developed exclusively for use in one country with only translators from that country, there is no assurance that speakers in other countries will adequately understand the translation. Cultural adaptation usually involves the review of an existing translation by native speaking translators or experts from the target country who identify problematic wording and suggest revisions. In addition to the linguistic work of the cultural adaptation process, it is advisable to test the adapted questionnaire in the target country to ensure that patients also endorse this adapted version.
